We really don’t deal a lot with people dying on the DAREDEVILS often.  In Cajun Caper we had Deveraux and McGinty get beat up, but on the last page two crewmen got presumably killed by the Fishmen.  The danger element of the story should be apparent now.  This week’s page was all about planting that seed of dread in y our mind.  The DAREDEVILS are not safe, they are not going to escape out the back window and laugh this one off.  Things are terrible for them in the inky blackness of the deep ocean, and they may never get better.  Two redshirts payed the price so far, but who is next?  Tuesday’s page is not only one of the best that Danilo’s ever drawn, it is one of the most important moments in DAREDEVILS history.  I’m not overselling it either.

Back to this week’s page.  Seeing the fishmen climb the walls was something we were really excited to see from Danilo, he really captured their sense of speed and impending doom.  I’m also a big fan of the tweety birds over McCarver and Joe’s heads as Deveraux is dragging the two spellbound officers while running.  And even though we say it sometimes, we don’t say it enough, I’d like to point out how great the lettering is.  Captain’s word buzz-ins have always been stylistically great, and now that Fonografiks is varying word sizes within the balloons it really pops the page to some next level stuff.

The ThreeOneFive crew will have an interview on Webcomic Alliance tomorrow, so you should head that way.  The whole DAREDEVILS team answered questions for it.  Matt has compiled the answers and has not told us what we each said, so it’s exciting.  When I see it tomorrow it will be the first time I’ve seen it.  Should be fun –  Stay tuned!

Also coming up on Tuesday, the page will be available in both regular AND Atomovision.  Three pages so far this chapter will have been Atomovisioned, and there is still one more to go!  Eventually by the end of this chapter we’ll open up the Atomovision section in the member’s area.  Right now we’re focusing on getting the writing for chapter 2 done.

We didn’t win the Powerball drawing last night, which mean’s we’re not incredibly rich.  So you should probably donate to our webcomic.  If you do, we’ll spend the money on more  Powerball tickets and turn your modest donation into a vast fortune.  After we have amassed our fortune, we’ll make the DAREDEVILS forever, or we’ll have our butlers write it.  Rich people stuff.

Happy Mothers Day!

The DAREDEVILS are about to have the mother of all invasions on their hand, as a horde or fish dudes has boarded the ship!  The next several pages are bonkerstown, so make sure you tune in each and EVERY Tuesday for ADVENTURE!

This page is another Danilo masterpiece, and if you haven’t seen how good it looks in 3D then you are cheating yourself out of a great thing you can look at FOR FREE.  It is literally no money.  You just have to sign up for the Loyal Order of DAREDEVILERS.  You don’t have to put your real address or anything, you can also opt out of the address part.  All you need is a valid Email address.  You totally have one because you are on the Internet right now.  Don’t be a jerk.

As you can see the header this week isn’t good at all.  That is because I upgraded my computer to a brand spanking new AMD 8350 with a GeForce 660ti and 16g of RAM.  This thing has so many fans, that seal team 6 could fly it around killing terrorists.  I would prefer it if they didn’t though because I’m using it.  Oh, the header was bad because I haven’t put Photoshop on it yet.  All you get is Paint.  Windows 8 is proving to be hard to switch to, because it sucks.  Whatever though, I ised to play on an Amiga 500, so I am resilient.

This week I promised some Lunch, and Lunch I shall provide!

These are the initial sketches for the Fish People.  As you can see Danilo envisioned them in a variety of forms.  We kind of went with a mix of 1 and 3, but who knows?  The sea is dark and full of terrors.  These guys will end up in the Dossier section of the Members area in no time.  This is also a reminder that the Dossier section will update without much fanfare in the blog under the comic.  Conspicously missing right now is Joe from the crew manifest.  Why is that?  What could we be hiding?

Speaking of Member’s benefits, in TWO WEEKS there will be ANOTHER Atomovision version of Danilo’s art.  By the end of the chapter I should have a working Atomovision section to put all these things in, that means that like the Dossier pages, Atomovision pages will get filed and saved forever, for you to view AT YOUR OWN LEISURE!  Gumdrops.

In a little over a week our interview with Webcomic Alliance will be posted on their site.  We are the spotlight feature on that website this month, and so far it has been awesome.  New readers are coming aboard every day, and that is exactly the path we need to be on.  A path filled with radicalness and thunderawesomeness.  A path populated by very handsome and educated people, such as yourself.  Give us money.

Happy Cinco de Mayo, dudes.

This week is my finals week at my college.  It marks the first full year of school I have taken in a row since 1998, and the first time I actually did well in school.  I’m a decently smart guy, but I never finished anything post high school.  I went to the UofA with Matt the first time around and failed out extremely hard.  I wasn’t ready for school, I just wanted to get bombed and bang hostesses at the restaurant that I worked at (for 8 years!).  This time around I have a real goal, and that is to get a degree in web design.  The choice to go back to school was pretty abrupt for me.  One day I just decided to do it.  I was like hey I’m pretty good with photoshop, lets get a degree!  Also it’s so the company won’t have to pay for a designer.  Frugal.

Tuesday on the blotter we saw a sea creature bust through the aquanetic containment field and attack.  This page begins a fast paced race to the end of chapter one.  Hang on DAREDEVILERS, the ride just gets more intense from here.  Back to aquanetic containment fields.  Pretty cool, but what does it mean?  Is the field something that these creatures can somehow generate?  Or is it something else creating it?

Next week on the Lunch I’ll show you some never before seen sketch art work from Pitch Black Day.  I would show you this week, but it would take away from Tuesday’s page.  I’ve been starved for extra lunch to show off lately, mainly because of the members area launching and extra lunch going in there.  I’ll probably put these sketches in the member’s area eventually in the dossiers section, along with other sketch work.  The main issue is that we don’t get a ton of sketches from Danilo.  We are very hands off during his character creation process, only asking him for sketches when there is a major character that needs to be worked on.  He’s been spot on and we trust his vision, so while it is great as far as a working stand-point, it sucks because I can’t give you guys extra stuff to look at every week.

Speaking of cool stuff though, This coming week we’ll have another Atomovision page coming at your face. This one should be a doozy.  Also, I’m working with Dan to get the Atomovision environment ready to put up.  The members area will be fully open soon!

Like I said, it is finals week, so I can’t hang around this joint forever.  I’ll see you guys and gals next week.

Something strange is afoot over at the DEEP DIVE DAREDEVILS.  The ship has (another) hull breach, but instead of the water rushing in and killing everyone and probably disabling the Custer for a while, the water is being restrained somehow.  It’s impossible for this to happen, right?  What in the world could be stopping it?  We’ll find out on Tuesday, and we’ll also find out what is behind it.  After that, the book goes at an insane pace until the end of chapter 1.  We’re committed to getting these pages out on time and it looks like it is going to happen.  If we have to we can take a break mid-chapter to give Danilo time to finish up the art, but that is a big if and if it does happen, we’re sitting on some content that could find it’s way to the blotter.

Currently we’re finishing off the dialog portions of the script for chapter 1.  A lot happens and we’re balancing what we want to have said and what needs to be said to move the story along.  This is always a tough part of scripting a story.  We’ll think up something cool for a guy to say and then we’ll take a look at the art and realize that the bubble would crowd the art too much, or would slow the page down too much.  At the same time, in moments we feel like the art could speak for itself, sometimes we need to add something in to either serve the story or to slow the reader’s eye down just a smidge so that the impact of the art is fully realized.

The last thing in the world that we want is for the reader to look at the page for 2 seconds and then click away.  We spend a shitload of time writing this book, and Danilo spends a shitload of time drawing it.  Sometimes the page can be too fast, and if it is, then the time we spent making the page is wasted.  We ran into this problem during Secret of the Beaufort Sea during chapter 2.

Page 17 is kind of a flyover page in between the Captain  reveal on page 16 and the Whale reveal on page 18.  But even though it is just putting the pieces where they need to be, there is some really great art here.  That shot of Doc fixing Custer is awesome and as sci-fi as you can get.  The shadow beneath the Custer is scary and foreshadows the next page.  And the shot of Joe floating has such a feeling of helplessness in it, it is very cinematic.  The problem with the page is that we didn’t put enough words on it.  The words can be read in a second or three.  That’s it.  And even worse, in my mind, is that the page trails off without finishing a single thought.

We’re past Beaufort now, so it doesn’t matter.  You can just click to the next page and get the incredible whale reveal.  But for a week we left readers with no real substance in our words, and no real speed bumps on the page that would cause a reader to linger and really enjoy the art for how great it is.  We’ve learned from this and we’re more aware of the week to week reading experience of the page.  Pitch Black Day should hopefully pay closer attention to the week to week aspect because we’ve learned some stuff.

Learning stuff is awesome.  We’ll probably be learning stuff until the day we retire from this crazy game.  I hope so.

Hello DAREDEVILERS

This week’s page is available in both standard 2-D and incredible AtomoVision 3D, but you have to be a member to see that.  You should it’s awesome and it took a while to do so if you don’t do it you’re rude and we’re not friends.

The page actually turned out a lot differently than I wanted it to originally.  When I first blocked out this section of the plot I described this piece as “many mysterious orbs (the lights from the creature’s lure) approaching the Custer ominously.”  It was my intention that the page be more mysterious than it was cool, which it is now, for sure.  From a suspense point of view I still think we should have waited on revealing the creatures, but from a pacing point of view, getting the reader a page they can really enjoy visually and at the same time speculate on was more important.  In a 22 page book, the orbs would have been the right call because the time it took you to get to the reveal would have been a matter of seconds or minutes and not weeks.

The end result was a great looking page by Danilo Guida (as if it were ever in question.)  So at the end of the day, win.

So what exactly are those things rising to meet the Custer from the inky blackness of the abyss?  You’ll find out soon enough, DAREDEVILERS!  The next few pages are bonkers, and you will love them.

We will have some pretty cool news about the DAREDEVILS soon, we are going to be featured on a well known website and it will be awesome.  Hopefully it brings in lots of new peeps.  Don’t be scared, it won’t make you any less special, it would just be way better if you were like one of a million rather than a thousand.  Then you could brag about how you liked us before we were cool, and then stop liking us because everyone else does.  You would still secretly read our comic because like any good hipster you need to know how our mainstream popularity has made us lame.  But we won’t be lame, you will.  Jerk.

We’re going to launch the AtomoVision portion of the members page pretty soon, so keep a look out, and we’re always hard at work at making bonus content for your personal enjoyment.  We have something big planned for the break in between chapter’s 1 and 2, and the members page will be your avenue to getting the most out of what we’re dishing.

Welcome!

So we opened up the Dossier section of the members page this week.  It has the little McGinty adventure that we released last week in it, plus some crew manifest pages that reveal a little bit of backstory for some of the lesser known DAREDEVILS.  We realize that since we only come out with a page a week that we’ll never really get to explore some of the side characters fully like we would be able to if we were getting 22 pages a month like a regular comic.  We have a ton of stories to tell about the DAREDEVILS, but it’s verging on too many, and too many means that we’ll never get to it going at our current pace, so the dossier section will allow us to give you full DAREDEVILS adventures in prose form.  Cool right?  It is.  The answer is yes.

So this week’s page is crazy right?  Naked ladies on the Custer!  We really went out on a limb here with this page by putting PG-13 level nudity.  So far the book has been pretty PG rated, other than when Sedna showed up rocking some goddess-sizes jumbleronis.  The move should help transition readers to Pitch Black Day’s much more adult theme.  This tale is darker and more mature, and so are it’s characters.  I feel sorry for Doc here.  This Abigail chick fancied him.  A more adult conversation?  C’mon Doc! He wasn’t ready for it and blew it because while he is the world’s greatest man of science, he is not the world’s greatest man of poontang.

Too bad for Doc too, it looks like she brought all sorts of crazy stuff aboard.  The comment section was atwitter with speculation about our new leading lady, some really good guesses as to just what in the purple hell she is and what she’s up to, but alas no winners.  If only there was a hint somewhere, right?  Maybe on Facebook or something.

Next weeks page is a good one.  It is another page that the writers fought about too, so we’ll take a look at why in the weeks to come.  I can tell you that the decoder wheel will get some use this coming Tuesday though.  And AtomoVision makes it’s triumphant return!  That’s right, members will get the page without text in AtomoVision if they decode the secret code.  Chapter one also has two more AtomoVision pages later in the chapter, so we’re keeping busy on proving you DAREDEVILERS with as much awesome members content as possible.  All for free.  We’re like superheroes or something.

Pitch Black Day is here!

The first two stories about the DAREDEVILS were much more lighthearted than the tale we are about to tell.  I’m pretty proud of what we’ve come up with this time, and I think you’ll dig it as well.  You’d better, because we wrote it already and Danilo drew it.  So if you don’t like it, too bad for you, it just means that you hate awesome stuff.  I like awesome stuff, and you can tell because I like the DAREDEVILS.  Who are awesome.

Part of the reason why the tone of the story is so different is because we went about creating it differently.  Matt and Dan plotted the first story, and I came in at the script stage to help.  Cajun Caper was more of a collaborative effort, but Matt was mainly behind the plot itself again.  This time, I plotted the adventure, and then Matt and Dan ripped it apart and built it back together into something that made more sense.  There is certainly a darker tone to the story, that tone will make itself clear pretty early on.  Hopefully the world is ready for a darker story with the DAREDEVILS, because this story will set the stage for roughly the next two years of comics for us.  Pitch Black Day is part of what we are calling a Mega Arc that will involve the next three DAREDEVIL adventures.  It’s too early to bring those up though.

This week we unfurled another decoder ring message on you, and it led to story about McCarver in the form of an incident report.  This week we expand the Dossier section and open up a crew manifest that logs the activities of the characters in our stories so you can keep track of what they are up to, and the incident reports section, that will be filled with fun little one page stories that we make up, but will never get put into comic form.  The manifest will be passive content, and will update without much fanfare on the main comic site.  Still yet to open up in the Dossier section will be the Bonus Content area.  We’ll start filling that baby up once the first chapter of Pitch Black Day is done.  It’s not for another 11 weeks though, so chill.

We’ve got something cool planned for you in between chapters 1 and 2.  It is something no webcomic has ever dared do before.  Seriously, it will change the game forever.  Maybe.  Speaking of, the Eisner committee is getting their picks for best webcomic of the year together this week.  Let’s hope they pick the DAREDEVILS because we deserve it, and it would mean a lot to Matt, who promised to name his next baby after the award if we win.  Who cares about a stupid name right?  We want accolades!

Tuesday’s page is crazy.  We’ve never done anything like it.  It’ll crank the rating of the DAREDEVILS from a PG to a solid PG13!  It is not for the faint of heart, and some of you may not survive to tell your friends about how awesome the DAREDEVILS are and how they should all read the comic and like our Facebook page damn it!  Like it!  We’ve been stuck on 163 for a week!  We see how many people read the comic every week, why you no Facebook like?  I make cool Radiograms every Monday and I make these Lunches just for you every Sunday!  We promote them and provide links to them, so you don’t even need to bother with the bookmarks!  It’s so easy!   Just do it.  I’ll put a link at the bottom of this blog too.  Also, Tuesday’s page is bonkers.  That is all.  F’real though Facebook.

@evindempsey (not that I tweet very often, tweeting is dumb.  Who cares about what 142 character quip I have to say?  Half the time it’s just about a movie I hated.  Instead follow @thethreeonefive.  That’s Matt’s.  He tweets about dumb stuff too, but people seem to enjoy it, he has over 200 followers!  Crazy right?  He’s super boring in real life, so what fresh hell must his tweets be?  You know what?  Find out for yourself.  Follow him.  You get the same stuff you would on Facebook, but then also you get Matt hobnobbing with actual famous comicbook people too, so it’s better.  (it’s not better, it’s worse because Facebook is awesome and you should like us on that instead of following Matt. (follow Matt still though, because Twitter drives people to the site too, which is really all I care about.  Matt cares about the community feeling or something, I don’t know, I don’t read his stupid tweets.)))

So this week we launched the member service on the DAREDEVILS.  Hopefully extending the time players spent on the page, and adding a bit more fun to their Tuesdays.  This week we post the Cover to Pitch Black Day, so there won’t be any Member content, but we have a bunch planned for the first chapter of the story; 2 Atomo-Vision pages, a dossier and to get to those you’ll use the decoder the week they come out, but then after that you’ll be able to get them in the folder on the members page.

The concept started out pretty vague.  Just a decoder ring that decoded little messages at the bottom of each blog.  But as we worked on it we realized it could be a lot more.  I wanted a way to get Atomo-Vision more air time, and this seemed like the perfect way to go about it.  Sure, you have to be a member to see it now, but it’s free, so c’mon.  Also we wanted to make some detailed and expandable character dossiers that gave an in depth look into their backgrounds, and that would update as major events unfolded in the DAREDEVILS universe.  We thought that would be too much for the casual reader, so we made a cast page with light info, and we plan to drop the Dossiers on you during pages that prominently feature characters. or reveal something about them that lets us give you additional information if you want it.  We’ll reserve the Dossier feature for when real tough or emotional things happen to the characters.

Facebook has been being terrible to me lately.  I can’t seem to get it to display thumbnails for like, anything.  Every time I link the page it just gives me either no choices or weird ones. So I say enough!  Now I’ll be cutting out a panel or section of the week’s page and post it as a picture.  I’m not going to do that for the Lunch though.  The last few weeks it only seems to recognize the weird seal picture that I posted a while ago.  I like that picture, but I think it fails to truly grasp the ambiance of the Lunch.

I hope the Facebook thumbnail deciding committee decides to let me use that logo this week.

Our Facebook likes have been growing too slowly lately.  164 is pretty good, but I want to be at 264 by the end of Pitch Black Day.  So I’m going to dust off a classic Bonus Lunch .gif to try to drive our Facebook likes to all time highs.  Prepare yourselves.

Wow, that banner totally sucks.

It does!  But that’s only because I’ve been super busy with stuff for the DAREDEVILS!

First off, whoa!  A letter from the civil war finds it’s way to a long lost love.  Who knew the Captain was such a softie?  And what a bombshell!  He fought for the South?!  There has to be a story behind that somewhere, right?  Just like all mysteries for the DAREDEVILS, all will be revealed!  Well, eventually it will.  The Captain’s backstory is one of great tragedy and will draw a tear from even the most hardened man.  But next up we have Pitch Black Day!

Pitch Black Day changes the tone of the DAREDEVILS, it’s our most ambitious story yet!  We introduce new DAREDEVILS, new villains, and maybe even a love interest?  Get the life preservers out DAREDEVILERS, because you’ll want to show up every single week to catch the incredible dark excitement that is Pitch Black Day!

Also,

It’s my babyman’s birthday!  Argos is turning 4 today, and he already had a dogfood enchilada for breakfast.  In case you can’t tell, he’s an Italian Greyhound and he’s adorable. He’s also super mean to dogs he does not know, so watch out Cup!  He’s 7 pounds of fury.

Back to the plot.  This Lunch is going to be pretty Lunchpacked today, because next week we are dropping the Loyal Order of DAREDEVILERS member page onto the site!  We’ll have a mambers tab up top on our brand new (yet very similar) header, and then you just fill out some info and give your email and we’ll send you an activation link.  Don’t worry, we’re not going to sell your info or anything, we’ll just probably drop you a line when something huge is happening, or we’re starting our Kickstarter.

So a membership page you ask?  A Loyal Order?  What exciting things will you get to do?

It’s crunch time here at ThreeOneFive towers.  We’re frantically working to get the new features for the website up and running.  The skeleton is made, we just need to slap a pretty skin on it.  Good news is that it is Spring Break, so I have 7 days of uninturrupted time to work on it…  I’ll probably get to it day 6.

What a page this week, huh?  Boobs.  On. Heads.  The gangsters won.  Whenever you get boobs on your head you won.  It’s in the rules.  That panel is crazy.  I encourage everyone to take a second look.  Each of Sal’s gangmembers is having a great time.  It is worth considering a life of crime over… But even though the DAREDEVILS had one over on them, they got away with their lives and didn’t have to pay Sal any money for docking fees, so they saved a few bucks.

The Cajun Caper was written to serve two purposes.  First, we needed a buffer period between Beaufort Sea and Pitch Black Day.  We wanted Danilo to have ample breathing room to create the next DAREDEVILS story for us at a pace that would let him do his best work.  Secondly, the revelation on the last page of the story, the one on Tuesday, is a game changer.  We could have just had the information in the form of a line of dialog, or maybe in a caption panel, but writing a fun little lighthearted 10 page chase caper seemed like it would be the better play.  On Tuesday, two things will drop!  The page and your jaw!

In two weeks we plan to launch the Loyal Order of DAREDEVILERS membership function to the DAREDEVILS webcomic.  With this, readers will get exclusive content that we’ll drop on them from time to time with the weekly blog post on the bottom of the page post.  The first piece of exclusive content we’re dropping on your face is the first page of Pitch Black Day!  Whaaaaaa?  That’s right.  Pitch Black Day does not start for three weeks, but you get in in two weeks and the first page is just the cover so you get it two weeks early using that math!

The Cajun Caper comes to a close on Tuesday, so there won’t be much more time to talk about it.  For the Lunch this week, I want to show you the thumbnails from some of my favorite pages and how they translated to the final product.

As you can see, Smilton uses very simple wireframes to block out his panel.  I’ve always liked this particular panel because of Joe.  He is reveling in the fact that McGinty and Deveraux are in trouble.  He’s got a youthful energy that is pretty awesome.

Here’s another great panel from early on in the caper.  You can see that pencil Cup’s leg changes sides, and the blaster that Doc had in his hand changes to what was finalized as Mesmorizmo.  We felt that the hand held version of it would translate better on page, and would be easier to identify as something that hypnotized you by doing whatever it does.  Doc invented it, not me.  Ask him.
